If you are a DB2 DBA supporting SAP and your SAP system is BASIS 7.0 SR2 or lower, then you would have a "db2 runtime client" installed locally on each and every SAP application server. This means that you also have a db2 instance and a OS user on each application server.

This kind of configuration adds a lot to your maintenance work. Whenever you do a fixpack upgrade, you have got to apply the fixpack on all the application server (not forgetting a failvoer server or two - which incidentally many forget). Further you have to maintain all those db2instances and the OS users on the application servers.

This post is for those DB2 DBAs who are supporting SAP environments. At various times SAP DB2 DBAs need to move tables in db2 from one tablespace to another. Someone who has worked in a SAP production environment will know that many of the tables become very large and hard to manage. It becomes even more difficult to get a downtime for long running maintenance tasks.

It can even be used to deep compress tables without having to run an offline REORG on them. This is most useful if you have tables spanning hundreds of gigabytes and can’t afford the maintenance window to do the offline compression.

In a SAP environment when you create/drop tables and tablespaces you need to make sure that corresponding changes get recorded in the underlying SAP tables otherwise SAP will have trouble locating these objects.

The recommended way of doing it is using transaction db02 from SAP. An alternative way of doing is manipulating the SAP tables which store the data class definitions.
